It was great to once again check out some of the creative projects at this year’s Canadian Rockies Regional Science Fair!  About 160 students from Banff Elementary School, Lawrence Grassi Middle School, Exshaw School, and Banff Community High School came together in the BCHS gym to show off and talk about the results of their experiments.  I had the chance to chat with a few of them.

Science2017 1

Grade 7 student Robin Bozik’s project was all about monorails! She had a working model of the basic technology behind monoral design as well as two magnetically charged metal balls that were really hard to pull apart!

Science20172

LGMS Grade 5 student Maxwell Zoffman knows a lot about Archimedes, an ancient Greek inventor whose ideas are still used today.  He created a working model of the Archimedes Water Screw, a project that saw him win 2nd in the Engineering Science category for his age group.

Science2017 3

Liam saw some videos about breaking rulers with atmospheric pressure online and ran with that idea. Many rulers were harmed in the making of this science fair project.

Science 2017 4

Grade 7 Banff students Megan Crossland and Elouise Nolan teamed up to test substances that make ice melt fastest.  This one won 3rd place in the Chemical Science category for their age group.  My takeaway – if I ever need to melt ice from something fast and I don’t have any salt on hand, I’m grabbing the pickle jar.

Congratulations to all of the award and scholarship winners at this year’s Canadian Rockies Regional Science Fair!  And a special congratulations to John Poole, Matthias Gasser, and Quinn Blythe, whose excellent experiments have earned them trips to the Canada Wide Science Fair in May.
