Banff council has voted to take steps towards prohibiting the smoking or vaping of cannabis in all public spaces in the community, restricting its use to private residences and property once it becomes legal in Canada.  They’ve also directed administration to amend their land use bylaw to allow cannabis retail in the downtown district only, double the distance required by the province that cannabis retail stores can be located from daycare and child play areas, as well as set out a 100m separation between cannabis retail outlets.

I spoke with Mayor Karen Sorensen about the decisions as well as next steps and opportunities for public input.

In this post I’m also sharing a conversation I had with Mayor Sorensen a couple of weeks ago.  We discussed the decision around the trail for increased sidewalk seating and pedestrian friendliness on Wolf and Caribou Streets as well as whether Banff residents get good value for their municipal taxes.
